RATEL
Eén van de belangrijkste rituele/ceremoniële gebruiksvoorwerpen van de sjamaan
is de ratel.
Het
handvat van de ratel
staat symbool voor de wereldboom, de holle kalebas of de notendop symboliseert het universum.
De steentjes, zaden of stukjes boomwortel zijn de geesten en
zielen van voorouders. Door met de ratel
te schudden worden deze geesten geactiveerd en kunnen
ze de Sjamaan bijstaan
tijdens zijn trancereis naar
andere realiteiten.
Op de ratel
staat een afbeelding van het kracht- of totemdier, hetzij geschilderd, hetzij
uitgesneden. Verder kan de ratel
zijn versiert met veren. Ieder mens uit de westerse cultuur die met
Sjamanistische technieken werkt,
noemt men een ‘Sjamanisme beoefenaar’ of
‘Sjamanist’.

Naast kalebassen worden ook
materialen gebruikt als
rawhide,
hout,
hoorn en
notendoppen.

THE
(GOURD)RATTLE
One
of the most important tools for the Shaman
is the rattle.
Its
function is similar to that of the drums. They
are made
from skins, wood or
gourd. The
filling of a rattle
is a sacred affair. It
usually includes sacred or special stones. Rattles may be painted or have charms tied to them. Some
are hung with bells or feathers and animal
hair. They
become a sacred tool and may be passed
on
to another Shaman, accumulating sacredness and
power as they pass through the generations.
The
handle of the rattle represents the worldtree, the gourd the
universe.
The stones en seeds in the gourd
are the spirits en the souls of the
ancestors. By shaking
the rattle the spirits will wake up so they can
help the shaman during his trancejourney. On the rattle there's an image
of a totem animal.
It
is believed that there's
a rattle for eacht person and that when you
find
your rattle you can use it to call your own personal spirit.
